Film Studies Character types

The Hero: The hero is pretty straightfoward, and is usually male in Armageddon, this would most likely be Bruce Willis, as he is the one who in the end saves the day from the asteroid.

The Reluctant hero: Bruce Willis in Armageddon, could also be the reluctant hero, as the danger is thrust upon him when he is living his normal life. The reluctant hero, is usually someone who steps up to the challenge and does what needs to be done.

The bad guy: The bad guy is quite often rich, for examplei n titanic and someone who is always out for themselves. This is a character that the audience WANTS to see killed off. In Armageddon, this could be colonel willy sharp, who tries to detonate the atomic bomb, whilst they are still on the surface of the asteroid.

The bad guy turned good: The bad guy turned good, is usually someone who starts off being highly disliked, however in the end, they become 'good'. This could be the colonel Willy Sharp, once again, as he does try to detonate the bomb howeve he decides not to and carries on with the mission at hand.

The self doubter: The self doubter, is the character, if not characters that go through a shaky stage of disbelief. They believe, that they are not going to get through the disaster and everybody will die. They are usually heard saying "I can't go on anymore!" or "this is hopeless!" Usually towards the end these characters become hero like and do something good.

The kid or kids: There are usually children involved in a disaster movie, to add that emotional effect to it. Alot like, when we see chick go and see his son. And then towards the end of the film his wife forgives him for whatever he done, and he is reunited with his son. this makes the viewer feel happy emotionally, that he has succeeded.

The Strong Woman: This character is very common in modern times. they are usually fearless heroines, emotionally. In armageddon, a prime example is Grace, who even though her father sacrifices himself, she stays strong.

The Damsel in distress: In armageddon, this would be Grace, once again who we want to be okay at the end. We want her and A.J to make things work, this is yet another emotional part of a disaster movie.
